Aliens
When we look back in cinema, we can see a huge progression of monsters and aliens is certainly one that doesn't have a first set of rules. Meaning they do not have a defined weakness or strength or power that say a vampire or werewolf would have. Aliens in cinema have been mean in nature or sweet and adorable. They can look like us or they can look like some monster, bug, blob or even transform into trucks. They can have powers such as telepathy or the ability to save the world. They can be the strongest being but their bodies can be just as fragile as our own. As you can see there are many attributes that aliens can have and the description of their "monster" is not tied down to a set of rules like the vampire, werewolf, zombie genre.
However, since there is absolutely no proof of their existence, only what people want to believe, there is one type of alien that has come into the accepted realm of physical feature. This alien is the alien that we see in movies like Signs or in The Fourth Kind. This is feature is due to the successful alien movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
But in other films, like Star Wars, Starship Troopers, Lost In Space, etc. we see aliens that can range in in physical features and pretty much have the same personality traits as we humans do. Granted in some of these alien movies it is usually a "us vs. them" type of deal (Humans vs. The Bug in Starship Troopers or Us vs The Slug people in Slither). Not all alien movies show the alien as the aggressor, like in Star Wars where people try to live in harmony and peace but of course we know their is a huge war where they all come together to try and fight a common evil. We may see a lot of the "us vs. them" plot lines because it can be seen as our own fears to accept whatever that is alien to us. Meaning we may demonize another culture just because we know nothing about them or we are too afraid to want to learn anything about the culture. This of course leads to conflict. However, in some alien movies, once we get to "know and understand" the aliens we tend to feel sorry or even learn to love them, like in E.T. or CJ7 (a Hong Kong alien movie)
Two of the most famous movies that show the Us. vs. Them mentality is War of the Worlds and Independence Day (parts 2 and 3 are slated to start shooting next year). We never felt sorry for the aliens because they came to our world and right away had a malicious intent on our race. Never did we have a chance to try an understand them. We just knew they were here for one reason and one reason only, to destroy our planet. Another movie where we get confused about the reason an alien came to our planet is in the movie "Day the Earth Stood Still". I will admit, I never saw the original, I only saw the remake with Keanu Reeves. The movie wasn't horrible, it was just a decent movie. But we see all the factors about the us vs. them storyline. Alien comes to our planet. Government captures alien. Alien warns us to let him go. Female doctor feels sorry for him and tries to help him because she goes under the idea that many of us hold that if an extraterrestrial being were to come to our planet it wouldn't be to harm us, but to learn (big mistake...to begin with). Woman and Alien on the run. Alien tells woman he is here to save the planet....from us. Alien says all human kind must die to save the planet. Woman tries to talk him out of it. Doesn't work...yet. Near end of world and woman finally convinces alien we can change. Alien finally agrees and stops the big Sphere of death from engulfing us all. As we can see from my lovely summary of the movie, The alien did come with malice intent, BUT it was for the betterment of the Earth. But since we are a smooth talking species we convinced him we can change.
We tend to see in a lot of the alien movies government involvement. Usually in two ways...they are either trying to understand the aliens or they are fighting the alien. In all the alien movies i watched it is usually us fighting them. The only time we tend to be nice to aliens is when it is on an individual basis with them or trying to help them. For example Flight of the Navigator, the aliens needed the boy to help them get back home, or as in E.T. the boy and his siblings helped E.T. but the law was afraid and wanted to take E.T. Or in the new recently released alien movie District 9.It wasn't so much the humans were afraid of the aliens, they treated them lower status. Like a master would own a slave type respect. However, there was one person there trying to "help" the aliens get back home and in return...well I won't give it away. Watch it for yourself. It was a different style of alien movie. But the aliens didn't look like the typical big eyes and pale skin. They looked like Bugs, like Shrimp or Prawns. This was a step away from the accepted physical look of an alien.
Below are some movies I feel are some of the diverse alien movies. No they aren't the best of the genre, but they are a vast difference in them that I think they touch on each different aspect of the genre. The Blob
A meteorite falls in the country of a small town, bringing a jelly creature. An old farmer is attacked by the alien in his hand, and the youths Steve Andrews and his girlfriend Jane Martin take him to Dr. T. Hallen. The local doctor treats carefully the blister, and asks Steve to investigate the location where they found the old man. When Steve returns, he sees the blob killing the doctor. Steve and Jane try to warn the police and the dwellers, but nobody believe on them, while the blob engulfs many people, getting bigger and bigger. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Blob is a classic horror movie. Released in 1958, this movie was still pretty early in cinematic history but also pretty advanced for its special effects. The alien creature wasn't hard to make but, it was just a jelly blob like substance, it was still effective in scaring people. In the early years, aliens were anything and everything. They can look like the blob, or a giant bug, or some prehistoric creature.
The movie Slither by James Gunn paid homage to The Blob with how a creature came down to this earth and attacked the first person it came in contact with. In Slither, when the alien attacked Grant Grant he became the host that could control all the other people infected with the slugs. In The Blob, the blob would just slowly ingest its victims and anything in its path. But it grew in size with ever ingestion.
Another thing that is fascinating is that the heroes in the movie were teenagers. Not the people we would expect to protect us like the police or the military. We sometimes see in the alien movies that the government will be clueless on how to help or save us. The government seems to usually look like a chicken with it's head cut off until a normal average Joe discovers how to defeat them by accident. For example, in Independence Day, it was by accident that Jeff Goldblum's character discovered how to break the force field of the spaceships. It was Randy Quaid's character that saved the earth by flying and crashing his plane in the heart of the spaceship. It was the teen who by accident, discovered that the blob has a weakness of cold temperatures. The Diner where the teen's were hiding caught on fire and it was Steve McQueen's character who tried to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher and saw the Blob recoil from the cold temperature. When they discovered this they took the fire extinguisher's to freeze the alien and eventually dropped the frozen alien in the Arctic Ocean.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Planes reported missing in 1945 suddenly appear in the Mojave desert. A commercial flight is buzzed by a 'bright' object that the pilot 'wouldn't know how to describe'. Roy Neary, while working one night, has a Close Encounter... The US Government determine where the visitors plan to land and create an elaborate cover-up to keep people away. However, a group of people, including Neary, share a vision which draws them to the place and a meeting with new, and old, friends. Written by Mark Harding <[email protected]>
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is the movie that set the precedent of the accepted alien look. Were they modeled because people claim they were abducted by aliens and this is what they say or are people saying this is what aliens look like because of this movie? Who knows. But when it comes to actually telling the story of aliens coming to earth, we tend to see the big eyed, small mouth, pale skin alien.
Although I did not like this movie myself, I felt that this movie is one of the major important movies of the genre. It wasn't some 1950's cheeky type of movie like the Blob or the movie Them. These aliens didn't come here to destroy us. It was actually a movie when both sides (us and them) come to learn from each other. No violent wars. In this movie we also see how the aliens also control objects, like the opening of mailboxes, toys turning on, TVs turning on. There was some sort of control and advanced technology we see the aliens have that we do not possess.
Also, we see how there is a personality change in people. Rob Neary became more agitated and obsessed with building this mountain model. He wasn't the only one obsessed but he took the obsession to a different level where it caused him to have his wife leave him and take the children. We see in this clip that the aliens were not evil. We see them at the end as trying to befriend us. They make the hand gestures that go along with the tune everyone kept hearing. We also see they are gentle and at the end there are volunteers that willingly go with the aliens in the spaceship and travel into space. We can only assume it is to learn from one another. Which is a huge change from earlier movies in the genre where we also see teh aliens wanting to hurt the humans.

Alien
In the near future, during its return to the earth, a commercial spaceship Nostromo intercepts a distress SOS from a distant planet. The seven-member crew are woken up from the hypersleep and the spaceship subsequently descends on the planet. While exploring the planet, a three-member team of the crew discovers a derelict spaceship and a huge chamber inside it containing thousands of eggs. When a curious team member goes too near the egg the parasite inside the egg attacks him, rendering him unconscious. He is brought back aboard, the spaceship takes off. After a little while the parasite dies and his host wakes up seemingly unruffled. But other crew members are unaware of the living nightmare which is going to descend upon them when the alien creature planted inside its unfortunate host would emerge. Written by Soumitra
Alien, the first of 4 movies in the franchise (I'm not counting the Alien vs Predator movies), was the most successful alien horror movie. This movie is clearly not a "learn from them because they are our friends" type of alien movie. This movie was a violent, horror filled cat and mouse movie. The alien in a sense was not advanced like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. They seemed so primal and had only 2 reasons for existing. To kill and to breed.
This species is not the big eye, small mouth alien. This alien is more Bug like in features, but with a HUGE head, sharp teeth, strong in nature, and just animalistically unforgiving. They are the predator and we are the prey.
This movie obviously takes place in the future. But our intellect seems to not have advanced with our technology. Like in the Blob, our curiosity gets the best of us. When we see an egg or a rock, of course we poke at it and of course something attacks the poker. However, what we see that is different is that, after the victim wakes up when the parasite "dies" we see him as being normal. But that is when all hell breaks loose. The alien inserted another "alien" to bread inside us. The Aliens use us as the breeding vessel to help produce more of their kind. However, when the alien is done gestating inside of us, they burst through our ribcage and stomachs to escape and of course....the host dies.
What is also fascinating is that the alien has a blood that is acidic. If you cut the skin, their blood will eat through anything, metal, plastic, flesh.
As we see in the other movies, these aliens may seem primal, BUT they are a learning species. They are great hunters. They are patient and when they have you in their grip...you usually die. Like Ripley who died in the 3 Alien movie but is brought back to life in Alien Resurrection through cloning.

E.T.
While visiting the Earth at Night, a group of alien botanists is discovered and disturbed by an approaching human task force. Because of the more than hasty take-off, one of the visitors is left behind. The little alien finds himself all alone on a very strange planet. Fortunately, the extra-terrestrial soon finds a friend and emotional companion in 10-year-old Elliot, who discovered him looking for food in his family's garden shed. While E.T. slowly gets acquainted with Elliot's brother Michael, his sister Gertie as well as with Earth customs, members of the task force work day and night to track down the whereabouts of Earth's first visitor from Outer Space. The wish to go home again is strong in E.T., and after being able to communicate with Elliot and the others, E.T. starts building an improvised device to send a message home for his folks to come and pick him up. But before long, E.T. gets seriously sick, and because of his special connection to Elliot, the young boy suffers, too. The situation gets critical when the task force finally intervenes. By then, all help may already be too late, and there's no alien spaceship in sight. Written by Julian Reischl <[email protected]>
E.T. is a beloved family movie. It is a tale about a boy and an alien that came to this planet. This movie really is a sweet tale of friendship that can occur between 2 totally different species. It shows the audience that we shouldn't be afraid of the differences we have, we should embrace and learn. However, as we see in the movie the friendship is between the children and the alien and the government...well is the government as is fearful so they approach with guns (although in the revamped version, they took away the guns and replaced them with walkie talkies because of the violence in films *rolls eyes*) But if you watch the original we can see what the director was trying to portray, Governments/adults are fearful of the unknown while the children are innocent and willing to be more accepting because they are not thrown into the cynical world until they hit adulthood.
In the movie, Elliot first encounters the alien. He is afraid at first but he has this type of connection with E.T. ( which stands for extra terrestrial). We see that whatever the alien feels, Elliot feels. When the alien is hungry, so is Elliot. When the alien is tired, so is Elliot. This connection is so great between them that they have a bond of love. However, this connection is also harmful to Elliot. E.T. starts to get sick, and as he gets sicker E.T. decides to sever the connection he has with Elliot. This shows that the aliens aren't just some unfeeling species, they too are just like us. They came here to learn and they have feelings just like we do.

Signs
In Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Colleen Hess, the wife of local priest Reverend Graham Hess, dies a horrific death in a traffic accident. After the accident, Graham denounces his faith and his vocation to work full time on his farm. His brother, Merrill, a former minor league baseball player known more for his batting brawn than his finesse, moves into the farmhouse to assist his brother in looking after Graham's two adolescent children, asthmatic son Morgan and daughter Bo, who has a finicky taste for water. Six months after the accident, crop circles appear in Graham's corn field. They initially speculate that local trouble-making youth could be the culprits. However they learn that theirs is only one of a number of crop circles made simultaneously worldwide. In addition, animals have been acting erratically. Morgan and Bo seem to have a better sense of what is happening than the adults. Based on other evidence, the family slowly begins to believe that the crop circles are only one of many signs being sent by extraterrestrials. Not knowing if the extraterrestrials are friendly or not, the Hesses take extreme precautions to protect themselves. Graham also begins to believe that nothing that happens is by chance, and that everything has a reason. Written by Huggo
Signs is another movie that plays on the imagination. The alien isn't really shown in the movie. Only a few seconds in middle of the movie and maybe for about 3 minutes in the end. However, the alien in this movie is again based ont he alien feature from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. However, the aliens in this movie are taller and they seem to have a malign reason for being here. There was never a reason given to why they were here, just that they are here.
We see the crop circles in Graham's farm. They start to question what is going on. They become more and more frightened as weird events happen. His daughter Bo is always asking for water and questions when the water doesn't taste right. There is some sort of psychic connection between Graham's deceased wife and the alien. As she is lying in death she tells Graham a few things that the children must do in the future (you will see in the second clip below).
The movie never shows the government getting involved. It was always just normal people that are seeing the peculiarities because of the rash of crop circles appearing around the world. We also hear the alien's speak in some sort of "clicking sounding" language through the baby monitor. They have a fear of water and their bodies are just as fragile as ours. And the one alien has some sort of "dust particle" that shoots out from the wrists. Was it to kill the boy? We can only assume so because it seemed that everything these aliens did were of a malignant nature. Not malignant like the aliens in Alien, but still here to harm us in a fashion.
One of the funny parts of the movie was the use of foil on the heads of the main characters. They assumed that the aliens can read our minds, just because they are aliens and they have that feature right?? Well, it was jsut comical, but based on previous alien movies, it would seem they have that type of power.

Transformers
A long time ago, far away on the planet of Cybertron, an alien civil war was being waged between the two races of robots the noble hero Autobots led by the wise Optimus Prime and the devious evil Decepticons commanded by the dreaded Megatron for control over the Allspark, a mystical talisman that would grant unlimited power to whoever possessed it. When the Autobots managed to smuggle the Allspark off the planet, but Megatron blasted off in search of it. He eventually tracked it to the planet of Earth circa 1850, but his reckless desire for power sent him right into the Arctic Ocean, and the sheer cold forced him into a paralyzed state. His body was later found by Captain Archibald Witwicky, and before going into a comatose state Megatron used the last of his energy to engrave a map, showing the location of the Allspark, into the Captain's glasses, and send a transmission to Cybertron. But now the Earth is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between the Autobots and the evil Decepticons, which are able to change into a variety of objects, including cars, trucks, planes and other technological creations. Meanwhile a century later, at school a teenager named Sam Witwicky, (nicknamed Spike by his friends,) buys his new car (who is actually one of the Autobots named Bumblebee) after when he promised his dad that he would pass his test. The two robots seeking the cube Allspark with opposite intentions: the Autobots intend to protect the human beings, while the Deceptions want to destroy them. But unfortunately the ultimate power is held by Sam for mankind in the extraordinary adventure. Written by Anthony Pereyra {[email protected]}
Transformers, based on a Hasbro toy and cartoon in the 80's, was a successful blockbuster movie. It had everything, the good aliens and the bad aliens. The good wanted to save the Earth while the bad wanted to destroy us. It had the government that was afraid, but also secretive because they knew about the aliens. But that's what the government does, it keeps secrets from it citizens for our"safety".
The movie is a clear Us vs. Them. However, it always comes down to a normal person (Sam Witwicky) who saves the day. He is the chosen one to help defeat the Decepticons. The Autobots are the aliens that want to help save the Earth. What is so amazing about this movie is that there is a whole backstory between the aliens. There was a war between them that led them to Earth.
What is so unlike any other alien movie, is the look of the alien. They look like Cars or any type of transportation. They come near any type of mechanical device and they can transform into that device. Their skeletal body seems to be of a metal substance. Not like the soft tissue substance we have seen in other alien movies or some to accept what aliens look like. However in Transformers 2, we see an alien that can transform into a human...a freaky type of human. They also have the ability to talk in any language.
We also see that the transformers have been on this planet for many many years because there are older versions of transformers that are lying is dormant sleep. But what we do see at the end is the common goal of defeating the Decepticons. So both the American government, Autobots, and Sam join forces to defeat the enemy.

The Fourth Kind
In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. Modern-day, Alaska, where-mysteriously since the 1960s-a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film. Written by Anonymous
What is so fascinating about this alien movie is #1 it is based on "true events" #2 we never see the alien. This movie claims to be a factual re-enactment of what happened with psychologist Abigail Tyler, however as I did some research to see if this was real, apparently a Dr. Abigail Tyler never registered in Alaska to practice medicine. So is this a clever marketing ploy? Maybe. But in the beginning of the movie, Milla Jovovich clearly states for the audience to take what they want out of the movie. We apparently see actual footage from hypnosis sessions and police car dash cams. Is this real? Maybe, Maybe not. But this take the belief in aliens a step closer than just a normal run of the mill alien movie. This gives the possibility of the unknown.
The second thing is that we never see the alien. We see with our imagination and the help of the hypnosis Abigail puts her patients under. What we do see in the movie is that the patients common description of a "white owl" they see outside their window. We also see that all the patients tend to have some sort of amnesia that they only remember when they are under hypnosis. As the movie progresses, we come to understand that the "white owl" is the alien. The alien we come to see as the normal agreed upon description of the Big eyes, pale skin being like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Also like in Close Encounters, we see how the aliens have some sort of technology that is far beyond advanced than our own. They have some sort of mechanical interference when they arrive or decide to make contact and they can some how make us have personality shifts or obsessions and sometimes make us go mad.
But one main standout from this movie is that they try and say subtly that the aliens are some how ancient and have come to this planet long ago. Proof, they say, is in ancient Sumerian artwork. And also they speak in the forgotten Sumerian language.
If you haven't watched this movie. I highly suggest it. even if you do not believe in aliens this may make you think twice in why you don't believe.
